Conversational AI: a practical definition for business teams

Conversational AI is software that interprets a person message and produces a response or routes the conversation. It can combine language models, approved information and explicit workflow rules. A fluent reply does not prove that a fact or action is correct.

A business example

A visitor asks about your opening hours in ordinary language. The assistant answers from approved business information and can ask whether a callback is wanted. It should not invent a holiday schedule missing from the source.

What to check in a real deployment

Separate understanding, answering and acting. The assistant may interpret a request without permission or capability to carry it out. Test each boundary explicitly and explain when a person must respond.

Apply the definition to a useful customer next step

Write down what the visitor should learn and what happens after the conversation. Check the approved source, optional contact purpose and receiving person responsibilities. A technical label is not evidence that a specific integration, quality guarantee or business result exists.
